How can you take metal and allow it to be rigid enough that you might build a skyscraper and yet flexible enough that the skyscraper will not fall when the ground shakes in an earthquake? How can you take a 100,000 tons of that same metal and allow it to float? How can you use a different kind of metal that still weighs thousands of tons and have it fly into the air? You’d have to have a knowledge of the natural laws. You’d have to understand physics. You have to understand how the world is made around us. So that you would understand how displacing water actually allows the metal to float. Understanding thrust and lift allows it to fly. Understanding how the casters and dampeners allows the metal to actually shift in the midst of an earthquake and not collapse.

The same would be true about how life works relationally. You have to understand the laws of how we are wired, how we are in community with one another, how human beings flourish. See, as there are natural laws that allow us to understand the world around us and to be creative and to build life, there are natural laws of how we are made and how we are made in relationship with one another and even God himself. Understanding these laws uncomplicates life.

We’re going to look at wisdom. Wisdom is the skill of living. The knowledge of how God has made us and then bring ourselves in alignment with that knowledge so that we might flourish.

See, today we live in a time where reality is unclear, beliefs are individualized, and where disagreements are so polarized that it often turns into divisions, suspicions, and hostilities. In a moment like this, we don’t need louder sound bites. We need wisdom, the skill of living. God’s wisdom provides the insights that we need so desperately to untangle the mess and live grounded, whole, and flourishing lives. And so, we’re going to look at the wisdom of the Bible, the skill of living, because life doesn’t have to be this complicated, we can learn a better way.
